Day 117: Xerta (Cycling)

A cool start to the day but, just like the climate, it warmed up:

Definitely a smorgasbord of tunnels were traversed today:
Some where lit

Some were not:

Some, perhaps to keep out the taller rider! and the Penny-farthings cyclists!, had height restrictions:

I set off on this 169 kilometre ride with the intention of counting the number of tunnels I passed through, on reaching forty I gave up!

The route itself effectively consisted of three contiguous via Verdes:
First: El Baíx Ebre
Second: La Terra Alta

Third: Val de Zafán

Then it was on to some Strada Bianche for the run into Alcañiz

Fortunately, it does look as though the "Council" don't mow the verges! Which is obviously a good thing.

However, I nearly did not make this final section to Alcañiz because the end of the Val de Zafán via Verde was closed with a diversion. Yet, there was no indication as to the route of the diversion. I did take a road that looked as though it bisected the via Verde a short distance away. However, when I arrived at the location where the intersection should have been, there was no sign of it! I hesitated about whether or not to carry on. What enticed me to batter on was the thought of coffee, coke and pastries in Alcañiz!

Fortunately, as I drew near to the town of Valdealgorfa I managed to re-join the via Verde, which added roughly two kilometers to the journey. On my return I did notice that, travelling in the opposite direction from previously, detour signs were provided!

It also has to be reported that the quality of the coffee and pastries was not worth the effort! So it goes.

Not too far from the end of the ride I encountered this time piece:

At that time, the actual time was 18:16pm!

  • Distance driven: 0
  • Distance cycled: 169 kilometres
  • Weather: Blue skies, nice T am, too hot pm!

Today's route (original not with detour, which was put in place on 29/01/2024 - so no rush to get it reopened then!)
