Day 29: Denia (Ciclismo)
A view towards the first climb of the day (The blue sign points to the Miserat masts):
I can report that my perception of riding to the Miserat (turn off) via Pego is not perceptibly easier than via L'Atzubia! They are both very hard. However, the one major advantage going for the Pego route is the route surface is near perfect.
Yet more climbing to go:
And getting closer to the pass (below white line):
On reaching the turning up to The masts (an addition 110m of climbing in about 1km) my Garmin (navigational aid) was indicating I had a further 1000m of climbing to go without going to the masts!
Accordingly, given I'd cycled to the masts only a few days previously, I concluded that it really wasn't necessary to climb those additional 110 metres today! So onward I road. Moreover, at that point, I did not know what awaited me!
In the end, I should have climbed to the masts! What I was not aware of was the road closure I'd encounter six kilometres further along the route at the Mirador viewpoint) del Xap!
As a result:
- I had to do a u-turn
- The route was shorted by about 22 kilometres
- If I'd known, I'd have climbed the 110m to the masts.
- If I'd been in the UK I'd have probably continued on beyond the barrier. Being in a foreign country, where the police are armed and my grasp of the lingo is severely limited (mainly to ordering coffee and cake!), I decided that in this instance retreat was the wise choice!
Eventually I joined the original route and cycled through the Val de La d'Ebo and over the col etc. to Denia.
A good ride somewhat thwarted by a cortado carretera! Which didn't stop me enjoy it!
Distance driven: 0
Distance cycled: 80 km
Weather: Fine, if a little cloudy later in the day.
Today's route (as ridden):
If you're interested in the route I would have taken if the road was not closed you can view it here
