Day 61: Serón (Cycle/Drive)
Today's cycle started with a ride on the Via Verde (a Greenway) Guadix-Almondricos, which is 98.7 kilometres of what once was a railway line turned into a traffic free path for walkers and cyclists (and, perhaps riders of horses). I cycled almost 20 kilometres of it. I enjoyed the traffic free cycling, not that I encountered very much traffic on this route. However, the bike did end up covered in dust!
The climbing started shortly after leaving the Via Verde, and as I climbed the road surface went from just about as good as it gets to very poor. However, at approximately one kilometre from the coll/puerto the surface was near perfect again, which continued for the totality of the descent, which I very much enjoyed: at times it was fast and flowing at other times it was slower and more technical or care was needed where rocks/stones/gravel had to be avoided. Definitely a good road to descend.
Shortly thereafter I was on familiar roads for a while .... you may recall this from last year:
Returning to unfamiliar roads I eventually can across this ...:
... which I thought was rather curious, as I hurtled down the hill at about 60 kilometres an hour! (You can see it from quite some distance, so there is plenty of time to stop! (Safely!)).
On returning to the van I did the usual post ride stuff and, at about an hour before sunset, I drove to my new location, which is on the outskirts of Serón, adjacent to the Via Verde I rode on today, but not anywhere near here!
- Distance driven: 16 miles
- Distance cycled: 80 kilometres
- Weather: Some early morning clouds giving way to sunshine. MA T about 20°C,
- Location: Google Maps
Today's route (I forgot to mention that there are "goathead thorns" on the section of Via Verde I rode - Indeed, when I stopped to take a photo I found one embedded in the front tyre, which I obviously removed. I then went to check the rest of the tyre and ended up getting stabbed in the thumb by one!:
