Day 111: Pola de Lena (Cycle)

Oh what a day makes! Today's ride was one of the best this year. It is very easy for me to state that the climb to the Puerto de La Cubilla (1,863 metres) is definitely one of the best I've climbed. It is highly recommended.

What makes it so good:

  1. No crazy gradients
  2. Very good pavement
  3. Great scenery
  4. Exceptionally low traffic flow
  5. High quality flowing descent
  6. An excellent route to the puerto
  7. The endorphins were flowing and at times I was feeling pretty euphoric

Indeed, this climb ticks all the good boxes and non of the bad. That just about sums up this climb for me. Now go climb it yourself!!!

Here's some photos:

Profile of the final 17.8 kilometres:

About 7 kilometres to go, and it looks as though I'm heading into a "wall"!

At the port:

Stepping through to the otherside!

Translation of: queda terminantemente prohibida la circulación de vehículos a motor y bicicletas port las parcelas de este puerto.

The circulation of motor vehicles and bicycles is strictly prohibited on the plots of this port.

I have no idea what "plots of the port" is actually referring to! Maybe it simply means "keep of the grass"!

And a view from the climbside:

Only managed to stop once on the downside! Stopping would have only unnecessarily interrupted the flow state of the descent!

Looking down the valley where I climbed and descended:

To be honest, given the route and scenery, there could have been so many more photos.

Not only was the cycling very enjoyable, I was blessed with just about the best weather that this cyclist could ask for. A near perfect combination.

  • Distance driven: 0 miles
  • Distance cycled: 67 kilometres
  • Weather:-
    • General conditions: Sunny start, increasing high cloud as the day got older.
    • Temperature: About 14°C at start, about 16°C at puerto and about 20°C back at the van.
    • Wind (Beaufort): Light increasing to gentle/moderate breeze.

Today's (not very complicated) route:
