Day 143: Cassà de la Selva (Cycle)

What kind of eatery doesn't open on a Tuesday? The kind I visited today! Based on a recommendation, I altered, as in extended, today's route to visit what was billed as being one of the best coffee and cake establishments in the Girona region. Why oh way was it not made clear that they didn't open on a Tuesday, it should have been made clear that this was the case using LARGE CAPITAL, underlined , bold, highlighted red ...
Closed Tuesdays!
But it wasn't! (Well, to be honest it never would have. Instead ...
Cerrado Los Martes!
... is more appropriate!
Actual, being in Catalunya, it should be:
Tancat Els Dimarts!

Otherwise, the day started well:

  • The morning temperature was cool (for Spain) at 18°C.
  • It was overcast, so it remained cool until midday-ish when the sun came out to play!
  • Which made for a good first climb of the day and an opportunity to cool down during the descent from Els Angéls (perhaps the home to the local Cockney Chapter of a well known infamous biker gang).

Unfortunately, during Covid times, a young cyclist, Tina, was killed on the climb by a drunk driver who fled the scene. There is a "Ghost Bike", part way up the climb in memory of her:

That's two reminders, in two days!

From the pass, it mostly downhill, if you don't include the two bumps!, to the coast, where this piece of roundabout "art" can be found:

Located at Platja d'Aro, where my cake and coffee shop was closed (on a Tuesday of all days! - did I previously mention it was closed?)

On the way to the coast I was surprised to come across this puddle:

However, what surprised me more, whilst I surveyed the situation, was the cacophony of sound:

The most enjoyable part of the day was the climb up to Santa Pellaia. It is a great wee climb, most of it is about 3% to 4% for nearly 6 kilometres. Hurtling up it, gave the impression of what it must be like for a pro, a champ, or great hill climber cycling up one of the many steep climbs they do! Instead of an old man slowly crawly up to the pass. I know it was an illusion but, boy, was it fun while it lasted! I reckon my speed was roughly equivalent to a pro's speed on a gradient of about 12% or so (based on the speed/gradient graphics of the recent Giro highlights).

A very good bike ride but, shame about the coffee/cake shop being closed. Did I previously mention that it was closed: On a Tuesday, yes a Tuesday, how ridiculous is that? I definitely recommend the route ..... just not on a Tuesday .... did I mention why?

  • Distance driven: 0
  • Distance cycled: 98 kilometres
  • Weather: Overcast, brightened up, became overcast again, brightened up again. T ranged from about 18°C to 30 odd °C (on the bike in the sun - according to the Garmin (navigational aid)).

Today's route (you needed do the bit along the coast if it is a Tuesday!:
