Day 62: Near to Ugíjar (Drive/Cycle/Drive)

After breakfast and a restock of vital supplies I drove to La Calahorra. Where I was surprised to meet Clint the Statue!

From there I cycled up and down the north to south route to Puerto de La Ragua, which according to this sign is at an elevation of 1990 metres:

Which is inconsistent with this sign at the Puerto!

On the way up, I took these photographs:

This one was rather amusing, according to the sign, cyclists are allowed to cycle two abreast, whilst vehicles must overtake at least 1.5 metres from the outer most cyclist, all of which is supposed to take place safely on a singletrack road!

On the way down I took these photos:

Finally, this one was taken from the castle:

This was my first ascent of the puerto de La Ragua from the northern side. It is both an enjoyable climb and very enjoyable descent, which could only be improved by stopping vehicles using it whilst I'm descending. There was a close call when a car cut a corner!

Now, it must be said that the northern approach is significantly easier than the southern approach, which I have done twice from Berja. I definitely recommend both.

  • Distance driven: 71 miles
  • Distance cycled: 30 kilometres
